What a wonderful week we had in Sparrow Class! The children have been full of curiosity, enthusiasm, and fantastic ideas. Here is a little peek into what we have been learning and enjoying together. Please also click on the ‘Load More’ button to see more fantastic images!
Lunar New Year
We began the week by finding out all about Lunar New Year. The children loved exploring how this celebration is marked around the world. We made our own colourful Chinese dragons, looked at decorations and even tried using chopsticks—this was a big hit and produced lots of giggles and determination!
Forest School
In Forest School, the children enjoyed searching for the first signs of spring in our woodlands and playgrounds. They spotted buds, shoots, and early flowers, and had some wonderful discussions about seasonal change and new life beginning to grow.
English – The Terrible Trolls
In English, we have been reading The Terrible Trolls from The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children explored who the trolls are, what they look like, where they live, and what they like to eat. We have:
- Drawn our own trolls
- Built bridges for the troll
- Created healthier plates of food to feed the trolls
- Pretended to be trolls during role‑play
It has been lots of fun and has really helped the children deepen their understanding of characters and stories.
Topic – Growing (This Week: Babies)
Our topic theme this term is ‘Growing’, and this week we focused on babies. The children explored how humans grow and change over time, from babies to children to adults. We created our own “grow bags” to show how big our hands and feet are right now.
We also learned about what humans need to grow—food, water, and sleep—and the children made a cosy bed for teddy as part of this learning. During our discussions, we sequenced the human lifecycle, compared how we have changed since we were babies, and took part in wonderful role‑play where we cared for a baby by washing them, keeping them warm, and playing with them.
Our baby clinic was very popular, and the children were extremely gentle and responsible carers!
Maths – Number & Shape, Space and Measure
In Maths, our Number focus was comparison. We concentrated on the number 8 and used mathematical vocabulary such as “more than,” “less than,” and “equal to.” The children used practical resources to compare groups confidently.
In Shape and Space, we explored the order and sequence of time. We talked about the days of the week and events that happen in the morning and at night like cleaning our teeth and getting ready for school. The children enjoyed sequencing routines and explaining their own daily experiences.
What a Busy Week!
It has certainly been a busy first week back, filled with creativity, exploration, and fantastic thinking. Well done, Sparrows! The Reception Team are very proud of you all!
