What an exciting Science Week we’ve had in Year 3! The children have been fully immersed in hands‑on investigations, inspiring talks, and plenty of opportunities to explore how the world around us works. Here’s a little look at what we’ve been up to.
A Spectacular Start with a Real Scientist
Our week began last Friday with a whole‑school assembly led by a real scientist. The children were absolutely captivated as they watched a range of exciting live experiments—perfect for sparking curiosity and getting everyone thinking like scientists. The visit also introduced our upcoming Science Club, which will begin after half term. Lots of children left the hall buzzing with ideas and keen to get involved!
Geology Comes to Year 3
This week, we were lucky to have visitors from the British Geological Survey (BGS). They taught us all about different types of rocks, how they are formed, and why geology is such an important science. The children got to handle real rock samples and ask brilliant questions. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they discovered the science beneath our feet.
Float or Sink? Our Boat-Building Experiment
Year 3 also put their investigative skills to the test with a practical experiment all about floating and sinking. Working in teams, the children designed and built their own boats before entering them into a friendly competition: which boat could hold the most marbles before sinking?
There was fantastic teamwork on display—lots of discussion, testing, redesigning, and cheering each other on. Some boats surprised us all with just how many marbles they could carry!
Egg-citing Base 2 Egg Cart Finale
To finish off our Science Week, we ran our Base 2 science egg cart competition. This fun challenge brought laughter, creativity, and just a tiny bit of suspense as the children tested their designs. It was a brilliant way to round off a week filled with curiosity and scientific thinking.
Science Week has been a huge success, and we are so proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the children have been. We’re already looking forward to more scientific adventures—especially as we prepare for Science Club next half term!
