Welcome back! We’re looking forward to an exciting and busy half term in Year 3, packed with hands‑on learning, creativity and discovery. Below is an overview of what your child will be learning over the coming weeks, along with some ways you can support them at home.
Main Topic: Stone Age to Iron Age
Our main topic this half term takes us back in time as we explore pre‑historic Britain, from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age. The children will learn:
- What life was like for people in each period
- How humans changed and developed over time
- How tools, homes and food sources evolved
We’ll be comparing the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age and considering how each period helped shape the world we live in today.
Science: Plants
In Science, our focus will be on plants. Children will be learning:
- What plants need to survive (water, light, nutrients and space)
- How plants grow and change
- The life cycle of a flowering plant
- Why plants are important to humans and the environment
We’ll be using observations, diagrams and simple investigations to bring this topic to life.
Art: Stone Age Cave Paintings
Linking to our topic, the children will be studying and creating Stone Age cave art. They will:
- Explore why early humans created cave paintings
- Investigate the materials and colours used
- Experiment with texture, pattern and natural tones
- Create their own cave‑style artwork
This will allow children to combine creativity with historical understanding.
Geography: Pre‑Historic Sites
In Geography, we’ll be developing our map skills by identifying important pre‑historic sites, such as Stonehenge and Skara Brae. Children will learn:
- Where these sites are located
- Why they were important
- How they help us understand life in the past
