Hello Reception families,

Welcome to our very first homework blog post! Don’t worry, homework in Reception is designed to be quick, enjoyable and easy to fit into family life. The most important thing is spending a little time talking, reading and learning together.

Activity 1: Share Your SWAP Books
Thank you to everyone who has already returned their SWAP books. We have loved seeing the books come back, having been enjoyed at home.
This is a gentle reminder that SWAP books should be returned every Friday so that your child can choose a new book to take home. If you still have last week’s book, please send it back as soon as possible.
Sharing books together is one of the best ways to support your child’s learning. Even a few minutes each day makes a huge difference!

 

Activity 2: Read and Discuss the Crossdale Way

This week we would like you to look through the Crossdale Way poster together at home.
Talk about:

  • What each point means.
  • Why these expectations are important.
  • How your child can show these values at school.

A helpful discussion point is:
“At school, we do things this way because there are lots and lots of children learning together. We need to follow these rules to make sure everyone stays happy, safe and ready to learn.”
We would love the children to begin recognising that some rules help a whole community work together successfully.

Activity 3: Practise Our Pencil Grip
We have been working hard on using the correct pencil grip at school.
Please practise pencil grip at home with our special pencil grip chant:

“Pinch, flick and grip!”

pencil grip poster – Use the poster to help remind your child how to hold their pencil correctly. Just a few minutes of practice while drawing, colouring or writing is perfect.

Activity 4: Talk About Our Star Words
In our Understanding the World lessons last week, we learnt three new star words:

  • Unique
  • Family
  • Different

Please spend a few minutes talking about what these words mean.
You could ask questions such as:

  • What makes you unique?
  • Who is in our family?
  • How are people different from one another?
  • Why is it good that everyone is different?

These conversations help children deepen their understanding and learn new vocabulary.
