It’s been a fun (and very hot and sticky!) week in Reception. Although the children have been a little tired, they have coped admirably with the warm weather. We’ve been building on our learning from last week’s Healthy Living Week, reminding ourselves how to stay safe in the summer by keeping hydrated, wearing hats, finding shade, and applying sun cream.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about life cycles this week, including frogs, flowers, chickens and caterpillars. Our very own classroom caterpillars transformed into beautiful butterflies, and we released them into the Woodlands while singing the song we learned, “There’s a Tiny Caterpillar on a Leaf.” I wonder if your child can sing it to you, complete with the actions?

We also had a sneaky peek at our classroom for next year when we worked in their whilst  the new class, Kingfishers, visited the Reception classroom. During our visit, we learned about the artist Henri Matisse and created our own Matisse-inspired under-the-sea collages.

In literacy, we have innovated our Rainbow Fish story, which is now called The Colourful Jellyfish, who meets some interesting characters as he swims through the ocean. In maths, we have been taking a closer look at odds, evens and doubles—everyone was so impressive that Mrs Oliver thought she had walked into a Year 2 classroom yesterday!

To finish the week, the fabulous Crossdale PTA treated the children to a theatre production of The Jungle Book in the school hall—a massive thank you to all of the parents who kindly lent us their air conditioning units.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend—keep cool!
