Welcome back, Year 3! We are thrilled to begin a brand-new half term filled with curiosity, creativity and hands‑on learning. Our main topic this half term is Animals, and we have planned an exciting range of lessons and activities across all subjects. We also have some special events coming up, including Book Week and Science Week, which we know the children will absolutely love. It’s shaping up to be a very exciting few weeks!
In Science, we will be exploring how different animals survive in their environments. The children will learn about animal diets—focusing on herbivores, carnivores and omnivores—as well as how skeletons and bones support and protect living things. We will compare a range of animal skeletons and look closely at how body structures help animals move, hunt and stay safe. By the end of this unit, children will have a solid understanding of the features that help animals thrive in their habitats.
In Art, we will be building up our sketching skills through a step-by-step approach, practising line, shading, texture and proportion. These skills will lead us towards a final detailed sketch of a bird of prey. Children will develop their ability to observe closely and create depth and detail using sketching pencils. We are excited to see the wonderful artwork they will produce.
In Geography, we will be learning about different animal habitats around the world and exploring features of our own local area. The children will also be introduced to four‑figure grid references, helping them use maps accurately and understand geographical location. These map‑reading skills will support their wider understanding of how humans and animals interact with their environments.
Our PE lessons this half term will take place on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon. We will be developing ball skills, coordination and teamwork through basketball and netball. Please ensure PE kits are in school on both days.
We are looking forward to a fantastic half term full of learning, creativity and special events. With Book Week and Science Week just around the corner, it’s going to be a fun and memorable time in Year 3. Thank you for your continued support—we can’t wait to get started!
