Year 4 Writing Task 18.5.20

For your writing task this time I would like to share with you another activity that has come from Pie Corbett, a trainer, writer, author and poet who created the Talk for Writing approach to learning which we use in school. These activities are well-structured and reflect the different components of English lessons that we would teach during the week at school. This pack looks like it has been designed to last for about three weeks, so this can form your English / writing activities for this period.

To access the documents please click on the link below: https://www.talk4writing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Y4-Maria-Aliens.pdf

You can work through the activities at the pace which you prefer to work at; I have just described below how long I would spend on each section in school:

Week 1

Session 1: Read the aliens text on p2-4 and then complete the activities on p5.

Session 2: Alien comprehension (p6).

Session 3: Complete p7-9, understanding word choices. I would read the text again here too.

Session 4: Alien Headlines, followed by The Headline Game.

Session 5: Openers (p12).

Week 2

Session 6: Crazy Quotes (p13).

Session 7: Day in the Life of (p14).

Sesion 8: Create ideas for the expedition log (p15).

Session 9 and 10: Write your diary / log for your visit to Zaragon 10. Use the prompts to help you to include more detail for the different parts of your log. I would include some time here too for proofreading and checking after you have finished writing it.

Week 3

Session 11: read through the persuasive advert at the top of p18. Further down the page there are some ideas and strategies that authors use to make their adverts persuasive. Play about with some of these ideas for persuading other aliens to visit Zaragon 10.

Session 12: use the planner on p19 to record ideas for your own advert about Zaragon 10.

Session 13 and 14: Produce your persuasive leaflet for visiting Zaragon 10 (p20 and 21). I would include some time here too for proofreading and checking after you have finished writing it.

Session 15: free choice to explore one of the further activities on p22.

The activities are designed to be flexible so if your child is really excited about some bits of it more than others, then you can be guided by their interests.

As always, do email over any questions or queries, and I have really enjoyed seeing your work so do keep emailing that to me!

Enjoy :)
