For your writing task this week we are sharing an activity with a little more to get stuck into if you wish. The activities come from Pie Corbett, a trainer, writer, author and poet who created the Talk for Writing approach to learning which we use in school.

To access the documents please click on the link below and select Year 1 Unit.

Via this link you will find a series of activities linked to the story of Sidney Spider. Each activity is clearly explained and will cover English speaking, listening, reading and writing. The activities are designed to be shared and flexible so if your child is really excited about some bits of it be guided by their interests.

We looking forward to hearing how you get on.

  • Oak National Academy

    Published 22/04/20, by Admin

This week a new learning resource has been launched by the government called Oak National Academy. It is a collection of lessons and resources which are nice and easy to follow. They are made up of video lessons, quizzes and workshops. Each day there is a Maths, English and Foundation subject lesson.

The maths this week starts off with a focus on length and height which we were working on when we were last in school so it would be good revision for the children.

In the English lessons it focuses the children on instruction writing and using the conjunction ‘and’.

This is another great resource if you feel you need it at home and we will be happy to respond to any questions you have and provide support where necessary.

  • Teddy bear writing task

    Published 17/04/20, by Admin

    Dear Maple Class,

We hope you have all been enjoying the sunshine and were able to do some nice Easter activities at home. Both of us have been enjoying time outside and even put our tents up in the garden.

During our daily walks we have noticed so many amazing windows filled with rainbows. One member of Maple Class even has a full-sized Florence Nightingale in their window. What a perfect person to remind everyone about the importance of good handwashing. We have heard about children putting a teddy bear in their window for others to find, becoming a worldwide version of the children’s book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

This week we would love it if you could put a teddy bear in one of your windows for others to spot on their daily walk. For your writing task we would like you to write what your teddy bear sees from their hiding place. This could be real or you could use your imagination about what your bear sees.

Remember as always to think about:

    • Using finger spaces between each word
    • Using a capital letter to start each sentence and a full stop at the end
    • Use a range of descriptive language
    • Use joining words such as and, but, so

We have loved seeing pictures of your writing so far and are excited to read what your teddy bears will see. Remember if you want to contact us you can do so by using our maple class email (maple-teachers@crossdale.notts.sch.uk) . We have loved hearing from you.

We are missing you all and are looking forward to being back together again.

  • Writing task

    Published 04/04/20, by Admin

    Dear Maple Class,

We hope you are all well. Both your teachers are missing you all lots!

For your next writing task we would like you to write us a letter about what you have been up to at home. Are you enjoying doing the Joe Wicks PE everyday? What have you been playing in the garden? Have you read any good books? What are you looking forward to?

    Try to remember to include:

    • Finger spaces between words
    • Capital letters to start a sentence
    • A full stop to show the end of a sentence
    • Use joining words such as and, but, so, etc.
    • Use descriptive language

You could also use this as a chance to remind yourself of our rainbow grammar to make sure your sentences make sense and are punctuated correctly.

    • Green - the subject of the sentence
      • I went on a bear hunt in the garden.
    • Orange - the predicate - what did the subject do?
      • I went on a bear hunt in the garden.
    • Red - the punctuation at the end, e.g. full stop, exclamation mark
      • I went on a bear hunt in the garden.

Please could you ask your grown ups to take a picture of your writing and send it to us? We will then be able to send you a letter back!

We hope you are all having a good time at home and that you enjoy the nice weather this weekend looks set to bring.

We are both looking forward to hearing from you.

Mrs Morgan and Mrs Westie :)
