International School Award (ISA)

We are absolutely delighted to find that we have been awarded the ISA today. This award recognises the work we’re doing to instill a global dimension into the learning experience of all children at Crossdale. We feel this is a real 'feather in our cap' and will form the basis of some rich educational experiences for our children.

I am delighted to confirm that the PTA’s efforts to raise funds for the school have kicked off to a great start this year. The school has secured significant funding from a local sponsor – La Casa Interiors. For those driving on the Nottingham Road you can't fail to miss this new kitchen and cookware shop – it's a vibrant addition to Keyworth's business community and we are absolutely thrilled that they are committed to our community – confirming that Keyworth is a great place to live and work. La Casa is on the brink of launching a fantastic range of cookware which they will showcase at our Christmas Fair – so whether it’s a new kitchen or a simple loaf tin, you can be sure to find it on your doorstep.
We are aiming to develop a number of new calendar events this year and are considering events such as cookery demonstrations and wine tasting aimed at finding new ways to bring in funds for your school. If we can work with local businesses to get successful events off the ground, then we're all better off. Come along to the next PTA meeting if you have any ideas for new events.
Next time your passing La Casa, feel free to call in, I'm told they do excellent coffee! Thanks to Mike Snaddon and his team, we wish you all the very best in your business venture and thank you for supporting Crossdale Drive School.

Love in a Box

A huge thank you for all the generous donations towards our ‘Love in a Box’ appeal. Many of you have been collecting (or knitting!) items for months now. The children worked all afternoon on Thursday to put the boxes together ready for delivery. Due to your generosity we were able to deliver over 250 boxes to children and families who would not normally receive a gift at Christmas. . If you would like to read more about why your generosity makes such a difference, visit www.childrenindistress.org
A special thanks to all the parents and helpers who gave up the whole day on Friday to coordinate and organise the day.

They all – the five Base 3 children, Ritu and Anitha (our visitors from Bangalore) Mr Cresswell, Mrs Lees and Mr Mate have visited the Houses of Parliament for a special presentation as a result of our Cyber Champs work in which we learned about keeping safe on the internet.
We'll keep you posted during the day.

Reception this week…
This week in Reception we have been finding out about recycling and were joined by a visitor who taught us all about recycling different materials. Ask your children what the mice did in the story!!
We will be following this up by doing our own recycling in the form of junk models. Please send in your old boxes, tubes, cartons and pots for us to turn into masterpieces!!
On our Investigation Table this week we had some Romanesco Broccoli (courtesy of Eleanor Manton). This is a very interesting vegetable which is also known as a broccoflower and sparked off lots of conversations about what it looked, felt and smelt like. Might be a good veg to add to the weekly shop!!
We are always on the look out for interesting things for our Investigation Table and donations would be gladly received.
We have a busy week coming up with our visiting teachers from India and will be getting the visit started with our red, white and blue theme day on Tuesday.
Lastly, those of you new to Crossdale will have only just got to know Mrs Walker in the office. She has welcomed every new family to Crossdale and will be sadly missed. We will be giving her a well deserved Crossdale farewell during this week.

Footballs and Kit for Malawi
Well Done to the children in Year 6 who helped raise money (working with local resident Myrt Bradley) to send kit and footballs to Malawi. We recently received the following comments and pictures from the Orphanage in Malawi:
“Give a big thanks to the pupils and staff at Crossdale School” says Mrs Clara Mphande, Director of the Good Samaritan Orphan Care Centre, Mzimba, Central Malawi. “Now our boys are proud to compete in football matches in the smart football kit and using the new footballs paid for by Crossdale pupils”. Mrs Mphande goes on to say, “You cannot imagine how much this kindness means to our boys. They feel very proud in their smart new clothes and plan to score some fine goals in honour of everyone at Crossdale who has supported them”.

Reception Week 3
We have had a great time exploring in the sunshine this week.
We had some lovely photos taken by the photographer out on the Woodlands. He will be doing the indoor ones on Monday.
We have been exploring textures and the children had a chance to feel a snake skin.
We also took part in our whole school Harvest Festival. We sang lots of songs and acted out the story of 'Oliver's Vegetables'.
Please remember to send in water bottles as usual and if the hot weather continues please send children wearing sun cream and hats.
Many thanks.
Mrs Ingle

Crossdale 10k and Fun Run
On behalf of the whole school I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make yesterday such a fun and enjoyable day. We had over 500 runners and the level of support and the number of offers of help to the organising committee were outstanding.
A special thank you must go the organising committee who have been planning the race since January of this year. A mixture of new recruits and long standing committee members, they have worked tirelessly to make the event as successful as ever.
Not only is this event our largest single fund raiser (for the PTA and charity), but it is also our biggest community event. Below is a quote from our feedback site which shows the high regard in which the event is held:
"Just wanted to say thank you for putting on such a superb event today. Having completed countless 10Ks, half marathons, marathons and Ultras across the UK, this race has firmly placed itself amongst my list of favourites. The marshals were incredibly encouraging and I felt the organisation was superb. The T-shirt is also one of the best T-shirts I have seen. Only one gripe, can you please make the final hill a little tougher
Brilliant event, many thanks."

In Reception this week the children have been continuing to explore the classroom areas in their independent activity time and have been learning how to 'Plan, Choose, Use and Tidy'
With the help of the year one children they have made a great start at developing these important skills.
The children have enjoyed making the Photo Castles that went home this week. As well as helping you and your children become familiar with the children in the class there are lots of activities you can do with them. You could explore counting by finding out how many boys or girls, how many altogether? Or explore positional language by talking about who is next to, below or above.
We have also organised our hometime places this week. The children have their own table to go to so we can organise our book bags and belongings and end the day calm and relaxed!!
Finally look out for a 'Base One Buddies' display coming soon in the cloak room. This will have a photo of your child and their Year 2 Buddy. We encourage the year 2 children to look out for their Reception Buddy at lunchtime and playtime as well as planned activities such as paid reading.
Thank you for letting us know if your child has had any problems or worries as well as passing on information about what they are enjoying.
We are more than happy to speak to you and if your child has any worries in these early days we are keen to sort them out.
Bye for now!

We have had a lovely first full week in Reception……
We started the week by meeting the rest of the school in a welcome assembly.
We have been getting to know all of the new friends in our class. Look out for some lovely self portraits that the class have painted carefully.
P.E was great and the children showed off their dressing skills. Please check name labels when your uniform comes through the wash as we had a few mixed up clothes!!
We tried to Skype our link school in India and managed to hear Brother Cleetus talking. It's going to be very exciting finding out about our friends in India. Have a look on the website to see what Mr Cresswell did when he visited in the Summer term.
Finally we had our first French lesson with Miss Jackson.
What a busy week.
Au revoir for now.
Mrs Ingle

A message from Mrs Jones……….
THANK YOU so much for your kind wishes for my wedding and all of the gifts and vouchers given by parents and carers. It was lovely to see so many of you at the church with your children and I know that all the guests thoroughly enjoyed the choir’s performance. This feature made the service very special and memorable.
The photographer took lots of lovely pictures of the day, some of which as you will know, featured the choir and some of the other children who were there. If you would like to look at these online, then please follow this link…
And THANKS once more,
Mrs Jones.

Supporting Maths at Home – the Crossdale Booklet
Thanks to all of you who came along for our recent meeting where we discussed how you can support your children's learning in maths at home.
At the meeting, teaching staff talked about the importance of number facts (things like number bonds to ten and twenty, and times tables) and how these provide a foundation for children's learning in maths. We discussed activities that you could use at home to help your children develop this important knowledge and we also shared our new set of online maths games and resources – at www.timestoo.co.uk and www.interactive-resources.co.uk!
To help you support your child's progress through the number facts they need to learn, we created a comprehensive booklet which lists the particular number facts which your child will be working on at each stage in their school career. In addition, we included some suggestions for games and activities you can use to make this learning fun!
A printed copy of this booklet can be collected from the school office.
Many useful links to online resources are listed in the "Supporting Maths at Home" section of the school's website.

Red Nose Day – Friday March 18th 2011
On Comic Relief day we raised almost £1000! We’re really proud of the children for their generosity and commitment. The ideas and organisation on the day came largely from the children – I’m sure you’ll agree that they did a great job.
We had lots of fun on the day, but also thought carefully about the people we were trying to help. Below is an example: written by Hannah in Y3, we think this beautifully illustrates our children’s desire to help, and their understanding of the difficulties some people face on a daily basis.
'We want to help those people forever, make them the best they can be, help those people’s lives. They all have something inside them to make them special – they just don’t have the things they need. They are like a magician with no props or a bike with no wheels.'
Book Week – 2011
We all love books at Crossdale andthis week we organised lots of special activities to celebrate this!
Have a look at the slideshow to see some of the things we got up to – from teachers being dressed as trees in a surprise performance of the Gruffalo to our brilliant "Come Dressed As A Character From A Book Day!"

Ed Balls and Sam Oldham come back to Crossdale

Ed Balls and Sam Oldham, both Crossdale Old Boys, came back to school today to open our new 'Woodlands' outdoor learning area. Sam and Ed were both very impressed with the new £50,000 area and both commented on how much they would have enjoyed using the area when they were still pupils at Crossdale.
During an assembly before the opening Sam talked about winning Gold at the Youth Olympics and Ed talked about his life in politics and his time at Crossdale. The children enjoyed the experience thoroughly and asked lots of tricky questions!

This year's Christmas production, The Gift, was a great success. As ever, all children in the school got to play a part in a production which focussed on giving, with a special emphasis on the gifts that money can't buy. We hope the fantastic singing, dancing and acting really put you in the Christmas mood! We were especially proud of our Crossadle band. For the first time ever, we put together a band with 9 different instruments and almost twenty musicians. The band was such a success, popular with the children and parents, that we are hoping to get them performing again in the New Year. Merry Christmas!! |

Talent Show
We had a fantastic, if hot, time in the hall today as we watched School Council's End of Year Talent Show. Each class picked a couple of acts to show off their special abilities. (Reception picked the whole class!)
We saw dancing, singing, piano playing, guitar playing, gymnastics and cocktail making.
This is Josephine's fantastic recipe for a fruit cocktail. (You can click it for a bigger version.) The quantities were 200ml of grape juice, 200 ml of apple juice, 100 ml of orange juice and the juice of one freshly squeezed orange.
Josephine also added some apple, some grapes and a slice of orange on a cocktail stick and an umbrella!
It was delicious and very refreshing!
