Our “New Early Years Outdoor Play Area”

You have probably noticed that there are some builders at school. They are working on a new area which is mainly for our Reception children. (The rest of the school will be able to share it as well!) Here are some photographs; we’ll add some more in the next few days as it gets closer to being finished. We are still deciding on a name for this exciting new area; if you have any great ideas we’d love to hear them.

Storytelling with Mike from Mexican Tales

We all had a great time listening to Mike from Mexican Tales and his marvellous stories from all over the world. Amongst other things, we heard the best story we have ever heard about a hairy green toe!

After the assembly, children from Year 5 and 6 worked with Mike to write and practise their own stories. In the afternoon, these brave story tellers visited the other classes to share their stupendous stories!

The Crossdale Way

On Tuesday we mixed the children into 7 new mixed-age classes and spent the day thinking about the things we need to do at school to make sure everyone is happy and everyone learns as well as they can. Each ‘class’ worked with every teacher in school on range of fun activities to help launch ‘The Crossdale Way’, a set of rules which we all try hard to follow:

At Crossdale we CARE

Choose to do the right thing and be the best you can be

Always be kind and stay safe

Respect each other and show good manners

Everyone and the world we share is special

Learning together and having fun

Teddy Bears’ Hospital

On Monday students form Nottingham Medical School came to set up a Teddy Bear’s Hospital. Children in in base 1 took their Teddy Bears along to have a check up a x-ray in the clinics! They then went on to find out about the importance of keeping fit, explored their senses, found out about body parts and explored a real-life doctors bag. The children had a super day and the Teddy Bears went home feeling fit and well!

Big Weaving

Children from Base 1 spent Thursday afternoon weaving outside. They used trees, benches and anything or anybody standing still as looms. They had great fun producing work as a part of their project on weaving.

Crossdale Taekwondo Pee-Wee Demonstration

2nd February 2010 – 3:30pm to 4:15pm

If you are unsure what Taekwondo is and are curious about what happens at the Taekwondo sessions that take place on Tuesday afternoons this event will answer all your questions!

There will be an explanation of the history of the Crossdale Pee-Wee group  and an explanation of the grading system used in the sport.

The basic patterns and movements used in the sport will be demonstrated by members of the group – including past and present pupils of Crossdale. The boys and girls of the group will also be helped out by Sophie Chatel, a 3rd Dan and member of the Great Britain national team. Sophie is ranked No. 2 in the UK!

Procedure for Closure of School

  • A decision would be made as early as possible in the morning.
  • It would be broadcast on Radio Trent and BBC Radio Nottingham
  • Details will be displayed on the frontpage of the school website www.crossdaleschool.com

NOTE:- If it is a late announcement and children have already set off for school then they must continue to school so we can contact parents.  If they turn back and walk home because someone has told them on the way, we have no way of knowing that they have got home safetly.  Would you please make sure you tell your child that if they are on their way to school, to continue so we can contact parents (We will always try to ensure that a member of staff is at school).  Please understand that we may not be able to answer the phone at this time – as we maybe contacting parents to make collection arrangements, hopefully the information displayed via the website will answer your queries.

Ed Balls visits Crossdale

The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls, visited Crossdale today along with the Minister  for Schools, Vernon Coaker.  During the visit they met school council and participated in our Children in Need assembly.

ITN, Central News and East Midlands Today were all here, as well as the Evening Post. I have been assured that we will appear on television tonight, so set your video recorders for all news programmes! The presenter from Central News seemed particularly confident that we would feature on their 6pm show.

Mr Balls, Mr Coaker, their staff, and all of the journalists present were incredibly complimentary about the school, and singled out the children in particular for their good behaviour, manners and the confidence they demonstrated when interviewed.

We were all very proud of the children.

Love in a Box

A huge thank you for all the generous donations towards our ‘Love in a Box’ appeal. Many of you have been collecting (or knitting!) items for months now. The children worked all afternoon on Thursday to put the boxes together ready for delivery this morning. Due to your generosity we were able to deliver a record breaking 280 boxes. If you would like to read more about why your generosity makes such a difference, visit www.childrenindistress.org.

A special thanks to all the parents and helpers who gave up the whole day on Thursday to coordinate and organise the day.

September Newsletter

Welcome back!

It has been lovely to see the children return to school. They look smart and have come back in a really positive frame of mind. Thank you for ensuring they are wearing the correct school uniform – they look a real credit to the school. Your children may have told you that we are having a whole school push on good manners. We would really appreciate you reinforcing this at home. The children can earn stickers for their class when they show good manners, with the winning class each week earning an extra long playtime.
